PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 7 (SOMEONE LIKE YOU)

Rounding out my Piano Week's to-be-featured songs is another Adele hit, "Someone Like You." Though at first this wasn't my favorite, despite the constant oh-she-is-playing-her-favorite-song-again joke being thrown at me whenever I play this one, I do admit that it is now.

I won't be posting my self-illustrated tutorial today, but rather an instructional YouTube video through which I was able to learn how to play the song. There's a part where I can't keep up with the proper pace (waah, I just can't!help wanted photo 1-help.gif), so I am warning you not to expect the best piano playing for this song. I guess that also goes with the other videos in this challenge, but there you are, staying with me until the end. So thank you very much for that. photo thankyou.gif Till next challenge! photo adios_zps195ac2e2.gif

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 6 (SECRETS)

"Secrets" is the OST of the fantasy-adventure movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010). I liked it big time when I first heard (and saw) its "electrical" version being played in the movie, not to mention that that scene was so rad you would wish to witness such thing in real life. (oops, spoiler alert!beh photo 1-tongue.gif)

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 5 (FIX YOU)

Just in case you don't know, "Fix You" is an inspirational song sung by the British band Coldplay. I love playing this song on my keyboard. I know you will love it, too. photo angel-love_zps77938444.gif

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 4 (THE MAN WHO CAN'T BE MOVED)

Learning to play this song really ingrained in me the importance of fingering -- proper finger placement -- in playing the piano/ keyboard. It is hard to explain why, so let's just leave it at that.yes photo 1-yes.gif

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 3 (ROLLING IN THE DEEP)

To my recollection, I was able to learn Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" in just one sitting, which took a little over 20 minutes photo 1-curtsey.gif. Well maybe it was because it's one of my favorites. photo 1-gigglez.gif

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 2 (FIREFLIES)

I love to play this one a tad slower than the original. But here I opted to stick by the song's usual speed (so sorry for the frying sound sorry photo 1-sorry.gif). I'm always reminded of someone whenever I play this; don't know why though. photo 1-dntknw.gif

PIANO WEEK: SONG NO. 1 (A THOUSAND YEARS)

I’ve been dreaming of posting videos of me playing the keyboard on this blog. But given the phase I’ve been in lately, I just don’t seem to have the drive to finally get round to it.

And then one day I came to realize that setting aside that “dream” for so long might eventually lead me to just write it off, so much so that I’d probably do the same to my other to-do blog entries. Needless to say, of course I don’t want that to happen.

So today – armed with renewed enthusiasm – I’m setting out Piano Week. I will be recording a preselect song each day of this week, meaning seven different songs for seven days. Moreover, I will provide simple illustrations (which I made myself photo gdaydream_zps078d5378.gif) to teach you how to play some of them. It’s not that I’m good enough to be a piano teacher because you see I’m light-years away from being one photo 1-crazygirl.gif, but I think it’ll be all the more fun and fulfilling on my part to be able to share what I know with those who are just starting to learn the piano just like me.

I want to make it clear, though, that it was through classpiano.com by Regan Starr that I was able to learn the first six songs – not to mention almost all of the songs I know – that I’ll be having here. And I’d be remiss if I just go about this seven-day challenge without expressing first my sincerest gratitude to the site’s owner. So, photo thankyou.gif.

Moving on, here’s my Piano Week’s first song, "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. I once heard a piano-cello cover of this song and very much liked the “transition” (dunno if that’s the correct term for it) before the second part of the intro. So here you’ll be seeing and hearing me play my interpretation of that “transition,” which is actually made up of just two keys. photo 1-gigglez.gif

AT THE END OF THE WORLD...

At the end of the world
I will be there with you
And we'll throw a party to celebrate
The things we used to do

Like living life, breathing air
Running your fingers through my hair
Oh, this isn't fair

At the end of the world
I will hold you so close
So we won't notice the destruction
Of all we used to know

We will close our eyes
As the waters rise
We'll float away and you will say
"Oh, isn't this nice?"

Ah, at the end of the world
We'll be together, be together
Ah, if I can spend it with you
Then the end of the world don't matter at all

At the end of the world
We will kiss for the last time
And we won't feel the earth collapse into
A mess of flood and fire

We'll be making love
As the sky above falls down over us
We'll be the luckiest ones

At the end of the world
I will be there with you
And we'll throw a party to celebrate
The things we used to do

At the end of the world
I will be there with you
And we'll throw a party to celebrate
The things we used to do

So strange. This song kept playing in my head all day.Photobucket

BE STRONG

This must be the most confusing time of my life thus far, when even words fail me. I know there's something I want to share, but because I'm not so sure how to say it, the proper words to use don't come to my aid. But, thankfully, sometimes we come across something that does the talking for us. A poem or a song, perhaps, that sums it up. At this moment, for me it is Room For Two's "Roots Before Branches" that lends me such office. Here it goes...music

ROOTS BEFORE BRANCHES
So many things to do and say
But I can't seem to find my way
But I wanna know how
I know I'm meant for something else
But first I gotta find myself
But I don't know how

Oh, why do I reach for the stars
When I don't have wings
To carry me that far?

I gotta have roots before branches
To know who I am
Before I know who I wanna be
And faith to take chances
To live like I see
A place in this world for me

Sometimes I don't wanna feel
And forget the pain is real
Put my head in the clouds
Oh, start to run and then I fall
Seein' I can't get it all
Without my feet on the ground

There's always a seed
Before there's a rose
The more that it rains
The more I will grow

I gotta have roots before branches
To know who I am
Before I know who I wanna be
And faith to take chances
To live like I see
A place in this world
For me

Whatever comes
I know how to take it
Learn to be strong
I won't have to fake it
Are you understandin'
The wind can come and do its best
Blow me north and south, east and west
But I'll still be standing
I'll be standing

If I have roots before branches
To know who I am
Before I know who I wanna be
And faith to take chances
To live like I see
A place in this world

I gotta have roots before branches
To know who I am
Before I know who I wanna be
And faith to take chances
To live like I see
A place in this world
For me

I gotta have roots before branches

DAY 4: KARAOKE FUN TIME

I totally enjoy singing Karaoke songs and belting out my favorites, mostly comprised of those I know my amateurish singing can bear.

Testament to this, going to a KTV is usually a must-do whenever me and my friends go out for get-togethers; it somehow feels incomplete when we fail to do so.

It also serves as one of the key events during our family gatherings, where you can expect an aunt or an uncle telling you, "Oh, mag-praktis ka nang mabuti at nang maisali ka namin sa amateur singing contest sa barangay."Photobucket

I've been missing doing it lately though, as we don't have a videoke microphone at home, friends are quite busy for get-togethers, and the next family gathering I can most probably attend is our New Year celebration.

There's no use being sad, I know. Because for now I just make do with YouTube's Karaoke videos. What I've posted below are just five of the songs I've made a mental note of, just in case. He he.

Oh, and I just want to say thanks to those who have uploaded these videos!*highfive*

A MONTH BEFORE CHRISTMAS DAY

Whenever I hear this OPM (Original Pilipino Music) song, I'm always reminded of my father, who has been working as an OFW (overseas Filipino worker) for as long as I can remember. We've been celebrating 19 Christmas Days in a row without him, and this year's will likely be the 20th. Well, that's life. Moving on, here are the lyrics of Jimmy Borja's Sana Ngayong Pasko, the first two stanzas of which sum up my "heartache" during this "joyful" season.

SANA NGAYONG PASKO
Pasko na naman
Nguni't wala ka pa
Hanggang kailan kaya
Ako maghihintay sa iyo

Bakit ba naman
Kailangang lumisan pa
Ang tanging hangad ko lang
Ay makapiling ka

[Chorus]
Sana ngayong Pasko
Ay maalala mo pa rin ako
Hinahanap-hanap pag-ibig mo
At kahit wala ka na
Nangangarap at umaasa pa rin ako
Muling makita ka
At makasama ka
Sa araw ng Pasko

Pasko na naman
Nguni't wala ka pa
Hanggang kailan kaya
Ako maghihintay sa iyo

Bakit ba naman
Kailangang lumisan pa
Ang tanging hangad ko lang
Ay makapiling ka

[Repeat Chorus 2x]

Sana ngayong Pasko…

JUST A SONG

Just added a "music" element to this blog: an MP3 player at the bottom of the right pane. The song's actually the fourth (I guess) ending theme song on Detective Conan anime series (yeah, I'm still bounded by ityes). The melody for me is so lovely and expressive that even though without the English translation, I can still kind of "understand" its meaning; I can relate to it somehow. Well, anyway, here are the lyrics.

A SUMMER WITHOUT YOU
I'm tired of the hard mornings,
But I'm going to enjoy life
Even when I stumble.
Go and chase your distant dream --
I'll understand no matter how far apart we are.

That half-forgotten, sweet summer day...
How many days have passed since then?
The smiling face I loved,
Spending the days nearby for a while...
Ahh, I wish quietly for the days I can't ever return to.

To the kind person who is far away from me,
The gentle waves that lap against you
Will carry you away...
Because I lost all my memories,
And even my dreams that sparkled like that day.

That half-forgotten, sweet summer day...
One day, it'll return to our hearts.
I felt like I was growing up a little,
As we chose our own different paths...
Ahh, I wish quietly for the days I can't ever return to.

This summer without you remains too vivid...
Your voice, your quirks, they wrap around me.
It doesn't matter that you couldn't put it in words --
Your heart spread out, bathed in the sunrays...
Ahh, I wish quietly for the days I can't ever return to.

Ahh, I wish quietly for the days I can't ever return to.

Here are the original lyrics, if you want to sing along.music

ARE YOU... TALKING TO ME?!

I always find it amusing albeit odd when out of nowhere things seem to be talking directly to me, like they know how I feel at the moment or something.

I feel sure you've had the same experience as mine. You're pondering over what to do with your vacuous career amid listening to the radio (for background eh?) when the DJ suddenly says to you: "Believe in yourself and you will go far. It worked for me. I'm sure it'll work for you, too."

You're on your way home on a bus perhaps and really feel bent on taking a long time off from your 9-to-5 grind when you happen on a song that goes like: "You'll never enjoy your life living inside the box/ You're so afraid of taking chances/ How you gonna reach the top?"

You're on your insipid way to work and have already labeled the day as ho-hum while looking outside the jeepney window when a car with its rather delightful plate number GOD 100 passes by.

You're like, "Ok, I'm not gonna stress myself with this seemingly unending battle with myself over what my next step will be" by watching your recently discovered highly entertaining TV series when you catch a glimpse of this four-line poem on the screen: "Hold fast to dreams/ For when dreams go/ Life is a barren field/ Frozen with snow." And the list goes on.

"You'll never enjoy your life living inside the box," the song told me then. Curious, I searched for the rest of the song's lyrics on Google and found them to be very apt "words of encouragement" for a scaredy-cat like me.

Waiting Outside the Lines
Greyson Chance

You'll never enjoy your life,
living inside the box
You're so afraid of taking chances,
how you gonna reach the top?

Rules and regulations,
force you to play it safe
Get rid of all the hesitation,
it's time for you to seize the day

Instead of just sitting around
and looking down on tomorrow
You gotta let your feet off the ground,
the time is now

I'm waiting, waiting, just waiting,
I'm waiting, waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines

Try to have no regrets
even if it's just tonight
How you gonna walk ahead
if you keep living blind

Stuck in that same position,
you deserve so much more
There's a whole world around us,
just waiting to be explored

Instead of just sitting around
and looking down on tomorrow
You gotta let your feet off the ground,
the time is now, just let it go

Don't wanna have to force you to smile
I'm here to help you notice the rainbow
Cause I know,
What's in you is out there

I'm waiting, waiting, just waiting,
I'm waiting, waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines

I'm trying to be patient (I'm trying to be patient)
the first step is the hardest (the hardest)
I know you can make it,
go ahead and take it

I'm waiting, waiting, just waiting I'm waiting
I'm waiting, waiting, just waiting
I'm waiting, waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines
Waiting outside the lines

You'll never enjoy your life
Living inside the box
You're so afraid of taking chances,
How you gonna reach the top?

The poem, I later found out, was penned by Langston Hughes and has a title "Dreams," which reads: "Hold fast to dreams/ For if dreams die/ Life is a broken-winged bird/ That cannot fly/ Hold fast to dreams/ For when dreams go/ Life is a barren field/ Frozen with snow." And I suppose it likewise fits the bill. (I stumbled upon another great poem of Hughes. See it here.)

And so I say props for these inspirational happenstances. I guess, I've got to be talking to them again soon.

"WORRIES ON YOUR MIND"

This is not entirely an original idea, mind you, to come up with a Plants vs. Zombies-inspired blog entry. There's this one blogger I follow whose entry eons ago entitled "Plans vs. Worries" really amused and impressed me (now three cheers for Duking!). Though I was in kind of why-didn't-I-think-of-that? moment then, I just resolved to one day have my own "tribute" to the ever-present and ever-reliable "form of respite" (besides Facebook, of course) among the daily grinders.

If you pool yourself with those who have finished the game, have reached the end of level 5 I mean, you as likely as not know that Sunflower the Belter (aka Laura Shigihara) in that last part renders the game's LSS-inducing theme song "Zombies on Your Lawn" in between the credits (you can also go to Options then click Credits to see this music video). Below are my tweaked lyrics of the song, which took its cue from "Plans vs. Worries."

"WORRIES ON YOUR MIND"

One, two, three!

There's a worry on your mind
There's a worry on your mind
There's a worry on your mind
We don't want worries on our minds

I know you have a lot of things to do
You want them to work as you've planned them to
You act on your priorities one after another

You think you're alone and you can't
but you've got power to conspire with the universe
You like reaching for the stars
so we don't like worries

You can't do that you're weak (you're weak)
How dare you think you can (you can't)
Now go on with your dreams (nah don't)
Don't be afraid!

Maybe it's time to go ahead
pursue your dreams just like what I said
Life's so short don't ever waste your time

You're okay and you always matter
much better if you aim higher
in your hands lies what makes you happier

You really can't you'll lose (loser!)
Think of it, give up now (failure!)
It all starts with baby steps (it's okay)
Don't be afraid!

And I do hope it does justice to where it's supposed to.Photobucket
